Dotti the Deity Live at Beeriga with Charles Majek, Mo’Believe, Shay Lowe, Tosin Music and more.

From MTN Project Fame, to opening for Johnny Drille, and topping Spotify’s Viral Hits 50 – NG, Dotti the Deity is a rising star in the afro-folk and alternative genres. Dotti combines traditional folk music with modern production, an attention to visual detail and design, as well as building a vibrant brand with his fans called the Village People.

On June 22nd, 2023 Dotti hosted his fans at a free musical event at Beeriga, Lagos featuring musical performances from Dotti himself, Mo’Believe, Tosin Music, Shay Lowe and our very own Charles Majek. Combining hip-hop, folk and R&B, fans were treated to a plethora of performances from live bands to vocal renditions all through the night.

Kicking off his performance, Charles began his set with a short message about Bread Pt. 2 (feat. Osai, and all their Friends) before launching into his performances, following Bread Pt. 2 with Mick Jagger, and 2022-release Sip. Majek was supported on stage with dance moves and ad libs from Lagos-based rapper Labamz, a longtime collaborator with Majek.

Bread Pt. 2 (feat. Osai, and all their Friends) is a witty and borderline sarcastic tune, talking about the sometimes comical absurdity of life in Nigeria. Taking the baton from Bread (2015, 2019), Bread Pt. 2 follows the same rhyme/song pattern while addressing new but similar issues, and showcasing Majek’s ability to tell a conscious message while keeping the track fun and light-hearted. Majek compares Bread Pt. 2 to tracks like Eminem’s Who Knew, Fela Kuti’s Beasts of No Nation, Kendrick Lamar’s The Heart series, Streako’s Showbiz and more. By focusing on the message of the music while writing, Majek has ensured that although written and sung mostly in pidgin English, audiences from Nigeria and the diaspora can relate to the messages, while appreciating the artistry.

Wrapping up the event with a climatic dance outro, Charles Majek exemplifies stellar performances, taking the cue from Dotti who sets high standards of his stagecraft. As both artistes continue to push the boundaries of their crafts, their fans are in for treats of good music, live events and merchandise, with future collaborations being worked on.

Dotti’s new EP For You Knew Me is live on Spotify, showcasing the artiste’s range and versatility in combining folk with pop, and creating a palatable listening experience for both native Yoruba-speakers and those who do not. Stream For You Knew Me here and enjoy a recap of the concert below.
